Hudson’s Burger Bar, set to launch 20 May 2009, has always been in the pipeline for Ross Collins and David Rabie (Café Caprice) since Ross’s acquisition of Limnos Bakery on Kloof Street early last year.

“Our concept is to introduce a completely unique, simple, more direct burger bar, offering the highest quality burgers you can get in Cape Town. Our burgers will comprise of freshly ground beef, made in-house, every morning. No soya proteins, limited fat (from the regular 20% down to Hudson’s 5%), and no offal, just whole grain meat! What else makes Hudson’s so unique from the rest? Double crunch fries, sour dough buns, a chickpea and lentil veggie burger, vanilla lemonade, and other innovative toppings to top off the menu. We’re keeping it simple, but interesting.” Says Collins.

The décor and design elements of the burger bar comprise of sustainable products like natural woods and re-cycled; their goal being to create an organic feel, emulating the simplicity of the product.

Hudson’s will cater breakfasts, salads, and desserts, with their main focus on gourmet burgers at an affordable price. It’s been conceptualised as an extension of Caprice’s clientèle and bar-like atmosphere; a place for customers to grab a coffee in the morning and a beer in the eve, with the added convenience of its positioning on cosmopolitan Kloof Street.

The Opal Lounge

May. 13, 2009 No Comments Posted under: Restaurant Reviews

Amongst the array of Kloof Street’s gems, the Opal lounge tends to stand out, exuding that extra bit of eclectic opulence.
Positioned as a sophisticated yet homely restaurant, the Opal Lounge is situated in a 111 year old Victorian villa on the lower end of Kloof Street. Two stylish dining rooms, a glass enclosed Verandah, dramatic bar lounge, and garden deck, each one differently designed, provides a unique encounter for every visit.
The Oriental Lounge is an elegantly styled room displaying Chinese antiques, an enormous chandelier and other interesting Chinese works of art. The working fireplace further enhances the room’s ambience when dining in on cold and rainy days.
The Persian Lounge is the largest room with oversized couches, beautiful Persian rugs, Persian copper lanterns and ancient saddle bags adorning the walls, as well as a working fireplace adding warmth and mood.
The Verandah offers smokers, or non-smokers, a unique dining experience with great views of Table.
The Bar Lounge hosts original pressed ceilings meticulously hand-painted in black and gold, with Louis XV chairs and beautiful sofas to complete the look.
The Colonial Lounge is The Opal Lounge’s cozy smoking bar, decorated in antiques, fabrics and paintings from across Africa.
Lastly, the Garden Deck is a wonderful area for a pre, or post, dinner drinks and will become the area for lunches on hot summer days and lazy Sunday morning brunches.

Sinn’s Deli

Delicious and convenient – the new Sinn’s Deli opens in Wembley Square

Experience a dose of upmarket convenience and take away a taste of an award winning chef’s favourite things by visiting the latest and newest deli in town.  Chef Proprietor of Sinn’s Restaurant, Thomas Sinn has just opened the doors to Sinn’s Deli in Wembley Square, Gardens.  After two years of to-ing and fro-ing to secure the space next door to the Sinn’s ‘S’ bar, the new deli brings an urban-style mini ‘Biscuit-Mill-cum-upmarket convenience store’ right into the heart of one of Cape Town’s inner city hotspots.

The Sinn’s Deli caters for all tastes and needs. It stocks both local and imported high-quality products, as well as basic necessities such as bio-degradable loo paper, airtime, toothpaste and even cans of cool drinks.

The shop boasts around 130 different types of wines ranging from average priced to more expensive wines, about 30 different cheeses, a lovely selection of cold meats, a delectable assortment of decadent chocolates and other treats, including Sinnfull ice-cream.

If you’re running late for a birthday party and haven’t bought a present, Sinn’s Deli has all you’d need to put together a stunning gift – for example, a bottle of Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie with some Brie or some Lindt chocolate balls.

For those who work nearby or visit the Virgin Active gym at Wembley Square, you can stop off at Sinn’s Deli and pick up a ready-made meal, such as Bobotie or Thai chicken curry or a gourmet sandwich, all of which are prepared in the Sinn’s restaurant kitchen.

Manna Epicure

What a place! I met two friends for lunch there on Saturday. People queuing to get in, waiting round like seagulls for that next perfect table to open up. The walls are clad with an airborne tea party. Dainty tea pots wrapped in ribbon hang from the ceiling, and doily like place mats add texture to the wall area above the mantelpiece.

The menu boasts originality and simple decadence. Every dish brought past by the watrons looked like a work of art; but it’s the delicate, balanced flavours for which Manna Epicure is most renowned.

I chose the succulent fillet topped with red wine soaked porcini mushrooms in a creamy sauce which came with a side of roast potato wedges drizzled with a delicious cheese sauce.
Mouthwatering!

This is a fantastic place to go for a great breakfast, brunch or lunch.
I highly recommend it.

Geisha

Sushi Chefs at Geisha

Neat, clean, tidy but not clinical. In fact, despite the white interior theme throughout, Geisha is actually a pretty comfortable place to relax after work with a glass of good wine, and indulge in the half price sushi special they offer.

If you’re looking for a sushi deal of the century Geisha definitely offers Baluga a good run for its money, not that I could complain about Baluga at that!

My friend Regan and I tucked into our usual spread of avo and tuna rolls topped with calamari tempura; prawn tempura rolls; salmon sashimi, salmon roses, and an additional bean pod dish.

The sushi special drives an incredible bargain, but careful which wines you order as a glass or two could literally triple you bill!
Succulent, fresh, and delicious is how I choose to describe the sushi at Geisha…
As for the noodle dishes… I’m saving that delicacy (if I may call it that) for a whole nother chapter!
